Stew is one of the best comfort foods in the world. Every cuisine has its own versions of this simple, yet filling, dish. While some may write off stew as something too simple or homespun to bother with, stew can be a high culinary achievement. What is Boeuf Bourguignon but a delicious stew? It is also one of the classic dishes from French cuisine.

They are filling, comforting and make you feel good. Take a look at the recipes we offer and see if they do not give you a new appreciation for the humble stew.

What are Stew Recipes?

An Introduction to Homemade Stew

There is nothing quite like a big pot of homemade stew. If you have never made it before, you may feel a little intimidated, but do not worry. Stew is really a pretty easy recipe to make. Learning to make a delicious stew can help build your confidence in the kitchen.

First, pick out a recipe that sounds good. Gather all your ingredients together. Now it is time to prep. Cut up your meat and get it browned. Caramelize your onions; you will get more flavor from them if you do this step first. If you choose not to caramelize your onions, be sure you cut them up into many pieces. The flavor is in the onion juice, and if you do not help release it by cutting, you will only get a portion of the flavor. You can also add some garlic if you wish, but do not let it get too brown. If you do, it gets bitter.

Stew is Not All Meat - Save Room for the Vegetables

Vegetables like carrots, celery, potatoes, sweet potatoes, rutabagas, parsnips, turnips, and other choices can help you make a hearty homemade stew. Choose what you like best. Peel and chop them up into bite sized pieces. Add them to the meat and broth and let them stew. If you want to add peas or corn to your stew, add them at the end so they do not overcook.

Some stews seem to thicken on their own, while others need a little help. If you find your stew needs to be thicker, it is simple to mix up a roux of flour and butter in a saucepan. Let the flour brown a little bit, and then add some liquid from your stew until you have a thick gravy. Mix that back into your stew and stir well. Bring your stew to a light boil and you will have a thick and hearty stew in no time.

Homemade stew is really easy to make. Have fun with it. Serve it up with some biscuits or corn bread and you will have a delicious meal.

How Easy Can Stew Recipes Be?

If you still do not think stew recipes are easy, read on. Stews have been made since man began to cook with pots. By adding some meat chunks, some vegetables, and some liquid and leaving it to cook, you get a rich, bubbling bowl of stew that you will not be able to put down until it is empty. Stews have been on almost every menu in some form or other in every country. Five Reasons to Make Your Own Stew Recipes

Stew is a wonderful, easy food to make. It is also a part of our culinary heritage. As long as you have a pot and a heat source, you can make stew. You can buy stew in a can, but why do that when it is so simple to make? Sure, it takes a little longer, but it is worth the wait. While there are lots of great reasons to make your own stew recipes, here are the five most important ones:

1) It Tastes Good.

Unlike canned stew, homemade stew tastes fresh. You get to eat the stew as soon as it is done, not months after it was cooked and canned. Letting it cook slowly in the oven can really intensify the flavors, giving you even more reason to love eating it.

2) You Get to Choose the Ingredients.

Don't like onions? You do not have to put any in your stew. If you really like onions, double up on them. Add tomatoes if you like them. It is your stew. Make it the way you want.

3) There are No Preservatives.

Canned stew is full of preservatives and artificial flavors and colors. Making your own stew keeps all these nasty ingredients far away from you. Instead, you get nutritious ingredients that are fresh, wholesome, and full of flavor.

4) Stew is the Ultimate Comfort Food.

It feels pretty good to know your family is relaxing with a full belly after enjoying your homemade stew.

5) Stew is Versatile.

Got chicken? You can make a stew. You can also use beef, buffalo, venison, rabbit, or just a combination of vegetables. Keep some basic ingredients on hand and improvise the rest.

How to Make a Memorable Stew Recipe

Anyone can make a stew, but to make it memorable, you need to put in the extra effort. It is not difficult to do. Just pay close attention to the process and you will not be disappointed. You will be able to produce a hearty dish full of flavor for everyone to enjoy.

Ingredients and Presentation

Ingredients are the most important part. Fresh meat and vegetables are required to make the best tasting stew. Brown the meat first to bring out extra flavor. Even some of the vegetables can be browned first. Onions, in particular, contribute a lot more flavor if you caramelize them first. Taking the time for these extra steps will help make your stew memorable.

How you present your stew is also very important. Rustic soup bowls are a great choice for an attractive presentation. You can also make stew into something special by using some nice china when you serve it. Think of the elegance of Boeuf Bourguignon and other classic stew recipes. They are humble, yet elegant.

Quality and Quantity

Of course the quality is what really counts when you want your stew to remain in the memory of those who enjoyed it. Fresh ingredients, taking the time to prepare your ingredients to optimize flavor and a slow cooking time will result in a stew you can be proud to serve.

Stew is also an easy dish to make to feed a crowd. If you have a lot of friends or relatives coming to stay, stew is a hearty meal that is easy to make. Simply use more of everything. Unlike some recipes that get very fussy when you try to make large quantities, stew is very forgiving. You can make the meat stretch quite easily while still giving the stew the flavor you want.
